I took a quick look at two freight car books, and it
appears that Don is right that roof platforms were
rare on wood roof cars (although I didn't see enough
cars were you could be certain of both the roof type
and platform or lack there to be definitive). Many
steel roof cars also lack the platform, however.
Personally I never cared for the Grandt reefer hatch
parts as the I don't think the hatch part has enough
relief from the platform and the hinges look more like
barn door hinges than reefer hatch hinges. There may
be a prototype, but I'm not sure. Don's or the
Huff-N-Puff parts are better except for the latch
detail (which can be made from brass strip).

I guess the real question is what exactly you are
trying to accomplish. You could also just modify the
existing SHS hatches to make smaller hinge detail, for
example.
