About fast setting joint compound: If you use the regular joint
compound and put a fan blowing over it, assuming it is 1/8 thick, it
will be completely dry in about an hour.

About sponging it: you can do this after it is completely dry, which
eliminates the danger of gouging it with the sponge. Just start gently
rubbing with a wet sponge (or rag), soon there will be a thin layer of
semi-liquid which will be very smooth when it dries.

About painting: to get the darker stripe down the middle, instead of
airbrushing as the article recommends, I used the same technique that
is often recommended for backdrop sky. I used acrylic paints from
tubes. I mixed a gray, painted the road, then put a little more black
in the mix, and painted the darker middle while the first gray was
still wet. This blends and feathers nicely.
