As it turns out, CMR is a CUST0M builder of layouts, structures,
bridges, etc. His primary business is CUSTOM building stuff to
exactly what the customer wants. In between CUSTOM projects, he
fills up his spare time with designing and making standardized HO
kits. He makes the kits in small batches and usually has some in
stock. When another CUSTOM project arrives, he stops making kits and
does CUSTOM work. One of his projects was the HO display layout in
the B&O Museum in Baltimore.
Regarding your roundhouse question, you can have anything your little
S scale heart desires. A minor modification to an existing kit is
easy. He can also enlarge the entire structure by 36% and turn it
into a genuine S scale structure. Y'see, the dimensions for his
laser cutting machine are all on his computer and he can tap out a
few keystrokes and change things around fairly quickly. Or, he can
redesign the whole thing to have a different footprint and shape if
you would like that. He is very talented with the software and laser
machine.
I have two major structures done by CMR and they are very nice. I
would say that they are just short of being "winning contest quality"
which is darn good for something you just buy from a company.
One thing ya gotta keep in mind is that CMR's Jeff Springer does this
for a living. This is not his hobby. He has a wife and daughter to
support and a large leased shop area in Baltimore, MD and a few
employees as well. All this amounts to some fees which are well
beyond the normal kit prices charged by other firms which offer
standardized products made in their own home basements. So it is
difficult to compare a custom S scale roundhouse to a commercially
available HO kit of the same roundhouse. They are two different
animals made under totally different circumstances.
Jeff is a pleasure to work with, tolerates picky customers very well,
adjusts to change, does not nickel-dime the customer, and is
concerned with giving you what you want instead of what he usually
does on his own standard products. Once you bite the money bullet,
you will be very happy.
