Ed K.....I use 2" width as a rule of thumb which covers the normal width of
just about everything plus a scootch.  A "scootch" is a little bit more for
clearance purposes.  Most all box cars, passenger cars, etc. seem to fit
within this rule of thumb -- especially if you measure on the outer sides of
grab irons and the like.  It should be good enough for your purposes and
saves me a trip up to the attic to find the exact loco you are looking for.
