Don-

Early gas plants coverted coal to coke generating gas as the primary product
and coke as a byproduct.. "Coal gas", as it was called, fueled streetlights,
homes and industries. The coke, transported in open hoppers, was sold to steel
mills.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Gas_Works_Park_03.jpg for a pic of the
only surviving coal gas plant in the US. See also
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_gas for an article on coal gas.

My questions are:

QUESTION 1:
In the steel mill, coke is used to make steel.
In the gas plant, what do they do with the coke?
Sell it to steel mills?

If so... what kind of car is used to transport coke from the gas plant retort
building to a
steel mill?

QUESTION 2:
Why dont I need a storage bunker and quenching tower for my Gas Works?

btw....

I have found an excellent web site about Manufactured Gas facilities at:
http://www.hatheway.net/03_gas_plant_components.htm

QUESTION 3:
I have found several websites about projects using the steel mill kits to build
some
impressive steel mills.
http://s-ss1.home.mindspring.com/id7.html
http://www.midwestnpioneer.org/central/steelmill.html

btw: How a Steel mill works:
http://www.midwestnpioneer.org/central/ltv.html

I have not heard about anyone building a reallly nice gas plant area on a model
railroad.

Have you?

Thanks

Don (the clueless)
