With the exception of steel mill refractory operations, most 
"Producer Gas" companies (as the process was known here in the North 
East) supplied coke to local coal distributors for home use, mainly 
due to the low quality of the coke produced.

We had a Producer Gas works in my home town when I was a kid which 
ran continuously. Each time the chamber was emptied, there would be a 
shot of flame from the oven vent. The red hot coke would then be 
quenched and stored. The gas (of course) would be stored in steel 
tanks which could rise and fall with the amount of gas stored.

The coke was a desirable home and factory fuel as it burned clean 
with almost no ash. I can recall the hospitals in town advertising 
that they burned only 'clean' fuel - but that was before oil took over!

It was an interesting process and I did a paper and small scale 
demonstration of the process as a high school project - got an 'A' as 
I recall...
