Hi All --

I sent the gas works info to a friend of mine out in so. Cal. This was his
response, which I thought you might find interesting.

Have fun!

Hello Bill,

When I built the Chiat-Day Mojo Advertising World Headquarters building in
Venice, CA, back in 1989-90, it was constructed on the site of the former
Town Gas Works (a predecessor of the Southern California Gas Company). The
first part of the project was to remediate 75,000 CY of really nasty, very
heavily-contaminated soils (heavy hydrocarbons consisting of known
carcinogens including PAH's plus some really irritating, highly volatile
noxious contaminants) that were left over from the Crude Oil Gas
Manufacturing Process. This process used crude oil instead of coal and was
very popular along the West Coast. The resulting crude oil gas was very
similar to coal gas. Basically, they took heavy Bunker C crude oil and
flashed it with super-heated steam in a retort and then used a fractionating
column to distill off the various gases and liquors at different
temperatures. When natural gas distribution came into widespread
development following WWII, the Town Gas Plant was demolished. If you take
a look at old views of Venice (either aerials or street/canal views looking
north along what is today, Main Street) you will see a large gas holder
(similar to the ones that used to be located in downtown LA near LAUPT) with
plant/piping connected - that was Town Gas.

Thanks,
Eric
