In the early years most coke was transported in wooden boxcars and 
specialized coke cars that looked like roofless stock cars.
  During the transition period covered hoppers but mostly regular open 
hoppers without extensions were used.  I suspect the extensions were a 
post-1960's last use for twin hoppers as they were replaced by triple 
hoppers of 40' length.  Ed Wolfe's book on the Interstate Railroad, 
which shipped a lot of coke,  shows examples of all above.
  You can get into the coke business now and built the extensions as 
time permits.
