George's comment jogged a memory... If you have access to the Rock
Island Color Guide book by Hile, Hickcox & Miller; Morning Sun, 1996;
check out page 34. Color photo of an outside braced wooden box car
hauling coke, circa 1956.
You know it was hauling coke because the coke was too hot and set fire
to the car! The photo shows the car on a remote siding, still
smoldering, only the metal outside bracing, ends and roof are intact.
It also shows the two distinct piles of coke (now ashes!) sitting in
the car. This had to come from a small time operation, no major
industry would handle material this way. Anyway, neat photo, might
make an interesting layout detail. Of course, something like this
could only happen on the Rock Island!! <GRIN>
