Jim, the stenciling and the stripe are not specific to the Pennsy.
They are specified by AAR standards to identify cars equipped with
auto racks, and the "37+" refers to the particular rack setup in that
car. I'd have to dig through some records to find out exactly what
it meant, but it won't really have any bearing on what your model
looks like on the outside.

lettering question. Working on lettering a Pennsy X31 double door
box car, specifically an X31c in the 62800 series. The prototype
photo shows the right hand door with a stencil "Auto Racks" about
1/3rd of the way up the door. Under that is about a 6" wide white
stripe horizontally side to side across the door and under that is
stenciled "37+". To the SPF's out there, any idea what all this
means??

Ron!), all that information including the white stripe is included on
the PRR-12 decal set for the X31 (ball herald). If you haven't ever
spent some quality time with Des Plaines decals and a Building and
Structure Co. laser cut peel and stick wood box car interior kit; you
probably belong to too many egroups...! <G>
