The real question becomes one of source material: do we have anyone other
than Ed Loizeaux, Dick Karnes and Jeff English who are capable of in-depth
articles?

Hi Bill....

Just an opinion here from a guy formerly involved with a magazine. In my
view, most all of the really good authors want to be proud of their article.
"Proud" can be defined in many ways, I suppose, but let's leave that to your
imagination for now.

Being published in a first-rate magazine that is respected by all your hobby
buddies, makes one feel proud. Appearing in a home-brew amateur effort does
not bring the same degree of pride to the author. Most of the authors whom
Dick Karnes and I dealt with were not necessarily looking for money, but
they demanded a quality presentation. Without quality and pride, they
simply would send their articles somewhere else. It was really quite
simple.

We spent so much time and money on producing quality color photographs
(thank you Bob Were) and quality detailed drawings (thank you Bill Stone),
that we eventually went broke -- and that was with a completely volunteer
staff excepting the Office Manager who was paid a lousy ten bucks per hour
to work out of her home. About the same wage as at the local McDonald's for
a "press one if you speak English" counter person. On the other hand,
without quality presentations we would not have received nearly as many
articles. S scale has a dilemma. No doubt about it.

On the other hand, I do not recollect any really serious problems with
attracting articles. For some reason, they just seemed to arrive in the
mailbox in time to be used without long delay. I am sure Dick rewrote much
of the text to be comprehensible, but that is what editors do. And we both
made lots of phone calls -- particularly early on. But overall, the
articles will flow in if the authors are properly motivated.

Just an opinion from the past, but I think it is still true today.

Cheers...Ed L.
