Ah, the "We need a magazine thing again..."

What for? To announce the "new products"? I am not complaining, but S has
been in a lull. As I sit here I cannot think of any major new S products in
over a year. Billy Wade is producing his craftsman kits, as is Jim King
producing his urethane kits. But at the level of something NEW, mostly from
AM or SHS, something completely new coming out has been on the slow side
lately.

If new anything is announced, I would expect to see it at the NASG
convention, read about it here, or hear about it from Don Thompson. (Tele
Thompson Tell The World!) Quarterly or worse bi-annual magazine will be
very out of date for new product announcements. History has told us it is a
tough road to produce a timely S SCALE printed magazine and not loose your
shirt in the process for number of reasons.

Which leads us to a new website. Again for WHAT?

I know where there is (basically) an S Scale website. I hear it is even
award winning. But it is MY website. I have HUNDREDS of hours in it. It has
been cumulative over 3+ years. I would never consider such a massive
undertaking like that for anyone else. Things get revised and updated
whenever the mood strikes me. I would be remiss if I did not post a new
article from Dick Karnes because I was not in the mood to do the update. You
would also never get 2 people to agree on very simple things like what it
would look like etc.

As a quick side note.., I have 2 websites up and 1 more unregistered domain
with www.oneandone.com for about $7.00 for month. Lesser hosting packages
are less expensive. I upload MASSIVE files for sharing with people and have
yet to see any ""full" messages or get charged extra. While their tech help
is by far the worst in the world, and by far the worst I have ever had the
extreme displeasure of dealing with, I think that is a pretty good price.

I also own www.prslhs.com With the few exceptions of brief sprits of
interest and contributions, my pleas for material largely are VERY
underwhelming. Websites that do not get updates regularly loose interest of
prospective visitors quickly. If you are depending on volunteers for
submissions to keep the site fresh, you are grossly overestimating the
interest in such a venture. Which leads me to the ongoing elusive SOMEBODY
to do all of this work for free, and in a timely basis. WHO is going to DO
all this work for free and (again) for WHAT or who to read? Will the real
SOMEBODY please stand up!

Anyone that is capable of doing a first class top notch interactive and
visually appealing website has done it or probably is doing it for a living.
Why would they want to do 1 for free? For the average working schlub (or
possibly for the 2-5 lucky and able retirees on the list) contributing any
such efforts would most likely cut heavily into the ever so precious
modeling time that we are all allegedly using wisely instead of complaining
about very insignificant things. I never seem to get enough modeling time in
spite of being unemployed for the past 6 months.

Like the Emperors new clothes, "Sorry I can't see them"

Finally for those that do not know about it, there is the monthly "The
Keystone Modeler".
http://www.prrths.com/Keystone%20Modeler/Keystone_Modeler.htm It is free,
has been very successful and is a great resource even for the unwashed fans
of the "other roads". But it has been a large burden to the core group that
produces it. And for reasons that I truly can't understand, the PRR T&HS has
sold literally hundreds of CDs with 18 months of TKM on it. I guess those
cunning Slobbering Pennsy Freaks have miraculously figured out how to sell
something that everyone with a computer can readily get for free....

Thank You,
Bill Lane
