Thorin - I would sugest you get your hands on Paul Mallery's Trackwork
Handbook and Linn Westcott's Building Model RR Benchwork. You might be
able to find them at shows or maybe a friend has one. The Mallery book
is out of print but is on Amazon for $60+. The price doesn't surprise
me, it is a valuable resource. Those books really set the baseline
standard for all layout construction.

P.S. My guess is both books would urge finding an alternative to an
uncompensated 4% grade!
