Ed and All--

In my experience, there are darn few adults that take up the hobby of model
railroading in ANY scale these days. If they aren't trapped as toddlers,
they are pretty much gone forever. So, can we trap toddlers with S? Only
if the parents see that it is cheaply enough priced so that if it gets
broken, it doesn't break the budget. I don't see that happening any time
soon....

I had a lot of folks say that if they were to start over they would do S,
but only a couple actually made the transition. When most folks are just
acquiring hobby supplies against the day that they can have their railroad
(which, I think, never happens in most cases, sadly), it is really the
collector mentality that is at work. And, if one is into collecting, then
collecting in the scales that have the most material goods to offer is where
you are going to go. None of this is bad mouthing the collector. In my
shop they paid for the store!

Have fun!

Trying to attract newcomers to the model railroading hobby to adopt S scale
would be very difficult considering hobby shops do not typically stock S
scale. But I could be wrong.... It would be interesting to hear from a hobby
shop owner (Bill, Ron, Doug Peck?)
regarding the ease of attracting a non-model railroader to S scale as a
first scale compared to an "adopted" scale later after cutting his teeth on
Athearn HO boxcar kits.

Cheers...Ed L.
