Hi David;
Welcome to the S scale list!
I don't know if anyone has fitted the AM drive to the Flyer boiler, but it
should be possible. It might require lots of work, or maybe once you gut the
electronics it the boiler will just drop on, no way to tell until someone tries.
If you want to make the attempt, American Models is selling the streamlined K4
version of the pacific for $179 right now, so it won't cost too much (compared
to brass) to try!
Other than brass, there are not too many RR specific models made in S (except
brass/PRR). If MP had anything close to USRA designs, then detailing to follow
a specific prototype sholdn't be too hared. A number of S diesels have been
made in MP paint over the years, BTW. Most are sold out now, but keep an eye on
Ebay or shows.
Someone mentioned scale drivers for the Flyonel steam models. People for many
years turned down drivers on AF and (in HO) the older European standard models,
generally by slowly running the engine blocked upside down and applying a file
to the flanges. Problem is, you still have an AC/TMCC locomotive with scale
wheels when you are done, not too many scalers using TMCC I'll bet.

I'm new to this group and S scale so please go easy on me with
this first post. After selling my O scale collection and loading up
on Missouri Pacific cars from SHS I decided I needed some motive
power. Ebay hooked me up with a modern Lionel/ American Flyer
Pacific class for the amazing low price of $185. My plans are to at
least letter it for the MoPac. I would like to do some reconstuctive
surgery to convert it into a P-73 class with the smooth streamlined
pilot. Of course when I bought this engine I did not know S scale
had a choice of AC, DC, or DDC. Before I get crazy cutting things up
and rearranging piping I need to know if I can basically get an AM
models' Pacific class engine and wheels fitted in the Lionel/ Flyer
model. Does anyone out there know if this frankenstein surgery can
be done? I like the Lionel/ Flyer model better because to me it
looks more realistic with better details. As for all the talk I have
seen about possible new steam locomotives, how about showing some
love to the Missouri Pacific? After all the Pacific class was named
for the MoPac.
