Bill you said:

"If ANY conversion kits were to be considered it would be for the NEW AF
engines only IMHO. Again would you buy a $250.00 wheel package for a 50+
year old $100.00 AF loco?"

OK, perhaps I see the point about not everyone wanting to go this direction,
but I am into the Reading. Frank Titman (remember his engines) bashed those AF
shells into some really nice locomotives. Where else am I going to get anything
close to that "ugly, but beautiful" shaped fire box. Sure, I know the shell is
not perfect scale, but in my case I'm modeling a particular railroad. I'm
willing to make some compromises to have something as close as possible to the
model locomotive I desire on my railroad. If I had the talent of Andre or
yourself, I would whip out a T-1, G3 or a Crusader in S. I simply don't see
anyone producing one in the near future.

Besides what difference does the age of a hunk of plastic or metal have to do
with anything if you consider it a raw material for a model. OK I see the point
that new "Flyonel" may look a bit more realistic than the old GAF, but I don't
see what I need there. I happen to have a multi piece GAF Atlantic that I got
from Sam Powell. Sam put Nixon drivers on the engine. The valve gear is of the
earlier style so it is not as junky as the later stuff. I am waiting for a
couple of Hodges type trailing trucks from two members of this group. I will
pick the one that works best. All I then need is a can motor and a lead truck
and I'm in business. The sum total of my expense here so far, by the way is
around $100.00.

I'm probably going to do a little "artful" work on the front end of the thing
as well. Again, I'm probably an exception to the rule as far as scale folks are
concerned, but I am not caught up with the notion that "no one fools with old
flyer conversions anymore". That is particularly true if it gets me where I
need to be.

I don't wish to rant, but I have my own opinion as well. With respect to all,

Gene
