I did somthing like it in HO and plan to do the same in S someday.

I mounted the camera in the upper container of a double-stack.  I
glued the two containers together (after removing the appropriate
floor and roof) and let the 9v battery rest on the car floor for a
lower centre of gravity.  The containers were not attached to the car
so the battery could be removed.

It would then look out over the top of the locomotives or the rest of
the train if reversed.

The previous year I mounted it inside the tail end of an heavyweight
observation car.  Didn't care for the tailing train to stop a car
length from the passenger car.

It was neat though to be watching the monitor and suddenly have the
image turn sideways as the cars rolled over in a derailment.
