I've sold many (in the thousands) items on eBay. All my railroad items that
weren't S scale eventually wound up on eBay. I think the fees are reasonable
including Pay-pal, and I have never been stiffed. Pay-pal charges less than a
credit card company charges for the same transaction, and the payment is in my
hands, so to speak, almost instantaneously. Whenever a person sends me an
email stating that their check is in the mail, I ship the item. The most
expensive item I've sold is around $500, but most sales are under $100. I've
had less than 5 complaints on items shipped out. I either tell them to keep
the item and I give them a refund, or I pay for them to ship it back. If
you're going to nit pick over a few small losses, you probably should find
another way to sell your stuff, but it's been worth it to me to have such a
broad world-wide audience to sell to. I've sold to Australia, Asia, South
America, Europe and all without a hitch.
By the way, I "always" start bids on my items at ridiculously low prices.
I've gotten a little less than I wanted on a few items, but on the whole, it
boggles my mind what some people will pay for things once they start bidding.
I've sold items for almost twice what the going price is even when I
included an add in the auction information. I love eBay. If you've got a lot
of expensive brass to sell, or you're doing it for a living, I can't give you
any advice. Everything to do with trains I do for the fun of it. I've even
thrown in extra items when I thought a person paid too much for something.

I have both sold and bought on ebay for a couple of years. We used to
favor personal checks but sometimes it took weeks to get them in house.
Then if we didn't know the individual we had to wait for clearance, thus
stuff sat here for weeks. I sold some photo equipment for a friend to a
fellow in Canada. The equipment was fairly heavy (way beyond normal
mail weight) and required two boxes. We used Fed Ex ground. There is a
fair amount of paperwork to fill out and one box made it just fine. The
larger, heavier bounced back here twice before we got 'mad'. In the end
Fed Ex wanted an extra $60 something dollars. I wonder how and if Pay
Pal would have delt with that situation.
We have since accepted the PayPal thing as a very good move as sometimes
the money is in the bank and the order is in the mail in a day or two.
Not a bad thing for the most part, but it does cut into the gross amount.
My personal peeve is sellers who mark the shipping up way above what it
costs. It's almost like a government deal!
