I've read about has the reefer containers plug into the ship's power supply, 
although if there are more refrigerated containers than that power supply 
can accomodate, they will load into the ship some kind of auxiliary power 
supply.  Or so I've read.

Those nose-mounted gen-sets are modular and easily interchangeable, I think. 
There is also the type that mounts under the highway chassis.  They just put 
out the electrical power.  The compressor and associated regulating 
equipment are contained within the front end of the container.

Here's something to read if you're interested, and go click on the line that 
says "Reefer Instructions and Safety Video" in the center.  It starts out 
with a little promotional speech, but pretty soon you're looking at a reefer 
on chassis with the gen-set mounted under the chassis.
