Researching radio control has always been on my to-do list. There is a
big difference between running current via aluminum rail spanning your
backyard and running current through wire and nickel silver rail in
your house. The outdoor G scale version figures it's easier to use a
big battery than run current through the rails. I think the S Scale
version is to run AC through the rails, and have a rectifier / battery
charger in the locomotive, with a battery that only has to store
enough to get across gaps. Then run the R/C circuitry and the motor
off the battery. That way you could leave 20 inch unpowered gaps
(whatever your longest locomotive is) at "return loop" kinds of
problems. With this system, you could also run on any DCC layout. The
DCC supplies the AC, and you ignore the control signals. You just need
good filtering to get rid of ripple.

It seems the problem is motor control. R/C airplanes only need
precision and slow speed when adjusting the control surfaces, landing
gear, things that work with very limited motion. We need slow
continuous smooth control of a motor. But, having seen the YouTube
someone referenced here in which guys were driving HO SUV's around
with radio control, maybe these problems have been solved.

Currently: ballasting track, a slow process for me.
