Hi All, Since we have not talked about couplers lately, I figured I would post this.
This is what I did today. I have a 1 of a kind Rex engine built by Sam Powell. He bashed a 0-6-0 into a 0-4-0 to resemble the PRR A5. Sam did a stunning job of it. I recently got a new can motor to replace the open frame motor and installed an NCE decoder. As always, I want S Scale couplers on my locomotives. Much to my surprise the front pilot beam had a solid dummy coupler that was broken off. I got the smallest Dremel cutter and milled out a coupler slot. The casting was rather soft and went really well. After looking at various possibilities I opted to hack at an 808. It does pivot but the centering aspect needs refinement. For the back I used 1 of my custom brass Kadee coupler. I made them years ago with these locos in mind. It is an 802 head on a #5 shank. After 10 minutes wrestling with it, I remembered (HOLD your EARS ED!) why I left HO because I HATED that #5 spring! Other then that the tender is now good to go. Check out the photos... http://www.lanestrains.com/A5_Couplers.jpg I will have this loco at the CJSS meet this weekend. At some point it will be in for a major makeover that will include correcting the tender steps (they are on the wrong side) and Tsunami sound.
