Mr. Wm......There are two solutions to your unreasonable psychological
hatred of KD#5 couplers. First, use the #3 which is fully assembled as
it comes in the package from the factory. Second, use the newer style
HO coupler with "whiskers" which are springs that are factory attached
to the shank. No more fussing with the brass sheet metal formed spring
arrangement. Either way, there is no more need to deal with the
centering spring. Now if your problem is with the knuckle spring, then
that is a different matter. At some point ya just gotta accept what is
out there if ya want an almost-realistic automatic operating coupler.
After all, this is model railroading and you are a certified S scale
kinda guy......right? Frankly, I don't think I have ever had any
problems with the knuckle spring using the newer KD couplers of recent
years. I think they have found a way to eliminate the way they used
to "pop out" in earlier versions. Maybe the pin that holds them in
place is a bit longer. Just a guess there -- no specific knowledge.
As long as yer havin' fun, it don't matter no how. Cheers...Ed L.
