Hi Chris;

I've done it a little, and seen it done more often. It works best when the
layout is near eye level. The smaller elements must be behind all the scale
elements (don't force perspective down the street and end up at a crossing with
a full scale track). Buildings next to the trains should be scale, those across
the street, or with a bit of lawn, a driveway or some trees between can be
smaller scale and generally it works.

As Mark indicates, you can also do great things with photos. Again, the layout
needs to be near eye height or the effect will fail. I recall at least one
published article on the subject in which the viewer was clearly looking DOWN
on the 3d structures but UP at the photo buildings. The result does NOT work at
all! The only advantage of the 3d "forced perspective" is you don't need to
worry about lighting or viewpoint issues, because the the buildings are 3d and
the lighting is the same. Making sure the back or the layout is well lighted is
also important.

Hi All. I'm looking for some opinions on forced perspective.
Specifically, how deep does a scene need to be to make HO structures
look plausible behind S structures? You know, those buildings over
the ridge, around the bend or beyond the tree line. If it's a matter
of adding 12-16" to the depth of a layout it might be worth
considering (in my opinion) for the possibilities it opens up with all
the great craftsman kits out there in HO. I could really expand a New
England village scene, for example, or place farms off in the
distance. Has anyone tried this? How did it work out?

Chris
