Hi all --

I was fortunate to get to visit with John Allen in Monterey, CA. He had
some amazing forced perspective stuff, but it really only worked in
photographs. Our eyes can see the "error" if it relates to man made items,
unless you close one eye. For the most part, we already undersize our
buildings -- reality is huge! Unless you live in a tiny house, you will
find that your house, if built to scale, is probably as big or bigger than
many of your "large" S buildings. The shopping center our old shop was in
would have taken a space 8 x 12 feet in HO, and it was just a small strip
mall.

I think Ed L.'s advice is sound...

Have fun!

Hi Chris...Here are some suggestions, but they do not directly
address your question regarding HO structures. My experience has
been that if you place non-S figures/vehicles/stuff far away from
accurate S scale things, you can get away with most anything. I have
placed HO figures in the foreground (near the viewer) and they make
the trees, rocks, lakes, etc. appear larger than otherwise. But they
are at least 12" from the S scale track and trains which run through
the middle of the scene. More HO stuff behind the track (at least
10" away) and even some N scale figures way up on the mountain (about
24" away from the S scale stuff) look right at home and are very
believable. The secret, in my case, is to place only nature-made
objects between the S scale stuff and the non-S scale stuff. Thus,
trees, rocks, rivers, stumps, some animals, bushes, cliffs, etc.
separate the S track/trains from the nearby non-S things. I believe
it best not to have non-S and S things close to each other in order
to avoid spoiling the illusion. I do not have any HO structures on
my layout, but I suppose the same general concepts would apply. Have
fun...Ed L.
