Well, not many guys build anything these days. Yes, I'm thankful for the
ready-to-run stuff, but wish that parts for scratchbuilding or kitbashing were
available. From the SHS, PRS, AM box cars available, one could effect a number
of transformations to match specific prototypes if the parts were available. A
hint of the potential, some of us are working on now or have completed, namely
the transformation of a USRA SS box car to a D&H prototype. We did this just by
removing the original SHS roof and replacing it with a slightly modified PRS
Viking roof. A few other changes were necessary, too, but will not be detailed
here.
Point is that accurate prototypes could be created if the parts were available.
As to passenger cars, it would not be profitable for Northeastern to reissue
the passenger car wood roofs and floors. I suspect, however, that a number of
people on this list still have some parts and would willingly sell them if an
interested modeler inquired. That is how I have obtained passenger car roof
stock in the past.
So if passenger or freight car roof stock is needed, we will either have to
locate generous list members who may have some stashed away or find a talented
woodworker with the necessary tools or equipment to create the stock from a
block of pine or basswood.
