Unfortunately, there's nothing of the Rogers locomotive left in old #136. In addition to replacement of the various wearing parts over the years, it was reboilered and, I believe, recylindered around 1910. (I say "around" because I'm too lazy to get up and check the actual date.) The new boiler is bigger and has a Vaughan-Horsey superheater which the folks at South Simcoe tell me is a b*%#d to renew. The heavier boiler also means new or reinforced frames.
As #136 looks today, it still wears the wooden cab fabricated for it in 1973 for the filming of "The National Dream" telefilm -- which is LONG overdue for DVD release. The cab is actually oversize -- had to fit the new boiler, after all -- but this is not too noticeable. Therefore, it is not a true CP prototype any more. The tender was made new by the CPR. I used to belong to the Ontario Rail Assn., the predecessor of the South Simcoe group. I haven't talked to anyone there for a couple of years, but I have never heard of anyone finding anything on the locomotive that actually dates from 1883 unless it's the bell. The whistle definitely isn't original. As an old shopman once said, when they take an old locomotive like that into the backshop, they jack up the bell and build a new locomotive underneath. The same goes for Prairie Dog Central #3, which is ostensibly an 1882 ex-CP 4-4-0. Having said that, if you want an excellent example of a "semi-modern" 4-4-0 for the pre-WW1 period, #136, with its actual CP steel cab would be a terrific model. The 4,000-gallon tender with the full coal-boards as used when it still ran in Ontario (before going to New Brunswick) would be roomy enough for tender drive or any other electronics. Firebox drive should be quite possible -- it was done in the CN E-10-a (thanks again, Simon!), which is a locomotive of comparable size. Personally -- Mr. Malette take note -- I'd be quite willing to spend the bucks for a CN U-2-g or H-6-g. And, I'd rather have the CP D-10 first, although I have great affection for #136. When and how much? regards ... pqr ----- Original Message ----- From: Andrew_Malette To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2008 8:35 PM Subject: {S-Scale List} Cold Night Musings for a 4-4-0 Hi All, Interesting. I thought that a CNR 4-8-4 would have been a major steam player. I have had a couple of people approach me for a 4-4-0. It would have to be CPR 136 which is currently running in Totenham, Ontario. You can see it at www.southsimcoerailway.ca. It was built by Rogers in 1883 in New Jersey. If you are really interested in a 4-4-0, let me know. I do have the blueprints and could make it happen instead of a CPR 10 wheeler. It would only take 20 people. cheers, Andy Malette www.mlwservices.ca [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
