Andy,

Well, yes, as it so happens I have a whole bunch of hankering for a
good ol 4-4-0. As you must understand, I am modeling the year 1885,
and my standard gauge prototypes are the B&O and the C&P, so there's a
whole bunch of need for the like. My grandiose plans for the next
forty years or so include three different B&O 4-4-0's, and two for the
C&P (Pennsy that is), as well as various other wheel arrangements.
That's one Mason, one Rogers, one B&O, and two PRR engines.

As a matter of fact, I am currently working on a set of four 4-4-0
engines. Three of these were provided by one notable James Sleeth,
and the fourth I was able to obtain from e-bay. (Two will return to
Jim) These are in fact die-cast toys with no motor, no tender, and no
flanged wheels, but are indeed almost exact S scale, and are promising
to be quite convertible to working models. So far I have obtained
drivers (from Alan Gibson Workshop), motors (from the microlocomotion
guy on ebay), and tender bodies. The next great hurdle is designing
and building a gearbox to convey the energy of my neodymium motors
into piston pounding driver slipping tractive force. I have it
designed, but still need to get the gears (from NWSL). Anyway, I have
determined that these diecast bodies are suitable for a number of
prototypes with minor detail changes, and even have the possibility of
going with a straight boiler instead of the stepped boiler of the toy.
I may even be able to build some of the 2-6-0 engines the B&O had
from this base.

If I get a chance I'll post a photo of this "toy" engine.
