wow, claims stories are interesting...used to ship liquid dye in cartons better than the dictated UPS specifications (they are located in the front of their service guide, which we read every year as they like to change the rules each year. there were 4 one gallon jugs of concentrated food dye per carton, "do not crush", "do not freeze", and "fragile" written in red marker on all 6 sides of the cartons. drivers would probably jump on them and the interior of the truck, all the packages in the truck and the driver would be green for a few weeks!!!! -- idiots!
when shipping anything, here are a few tips: page 7 of the following UPS document is a very good guideline to follow: http://www.ups-scs.com/tools/packaging_pointers.pdf and: use good packing tape (not cheap dollar store tape) Scotch 3m tape found at Staples and Home Depot is good. clear tape allows you to tape a label on the package. never use masking tape or string for packages. do not wrap packages in paper. seal all glued corners of the box (inside and out!) with packaging tape (the glue joint of a box is a weak point) after sealing the bottom of the box, cut a piece of cardboard (corrugated) the size of the bottom of the box and tape to all 4 walls of the carton. repeat for the top when done packing! use plenty of quality packing materials, (see UPS document above) anything that is fragile, double or triple box!!!! if you can shake the box and hear things rattle around, you didn't pack it right!!! suggestion: look at how SHS and American Models packs their locos and cars!!!! anything that is custom work, or one of a kind, have a wooden box built or use a 250-300 lb test carton. double boxing with packing materials is always a good idea! sheet foam is a good shock absorber and is cheap! always mark "Fragile" on all 6 sides of a box with locos and custom work, "this side up" with an arrow is good too!!! clearly print "from" and "to" addresses on the carton, NOT IN PENCIL!!! use black of blue markers (Sharpies ) put a packing slip inside the carton with to and from addresses. e-mail tracking numbers to recipient. this above stuff works...have been doing most of it for 30+ years with a very low claim record with UPS, FedEx and USPS, Airlines, and surface cargo (ship, truck, and train). In fact, when I do have a claim, they just pay it, as we don't claim much each year (I don't think we had any claims this year, and have done over $10,000.00 with UPS alone..... or do it your way and reinvent the wheel...
