Not S Scale but related to this topic. Funniest story I know is from my aunt
and goes back to the 1980s, long before current security paranoia.

She was returning to Canada from a trip to Mexico. There, she had bought a
souvenir -- a large round candle. Candles, as you know, have wicks. The
package was X-rayed. The Canadian Customs officer must have thought it was
something Wile E. Coyote would use against the Roadrunner. All of a sudden (as
she tells it), the alarm started ringing, red lights started flashing and she
was immediately surrounded by armed Customs officers.

After she opened the package, the excitement died down. Lucky for her the
candle wasn't made by Acme.

I once was with an O scale guy when we both
were going through airport security. As ususal,
I was traveling lightly. But he had an O scale
steam loco with him in a wooden box. The X-ray
showed a large chunk of metal and the inspector
needed to take a closer look. So the box was
opened and the inspector saw -- you guessed it --
a large chunk of metal shaped like a pipe bomb.
When requested to open up the boiler, the O scale
guy started to complain bitterly. His complaints
had no effect and the deed was about to commence.
I stepped up and showed the inspector a magazine
advertisement for the convention we were both going
to. Our destination matched the advertised location
of the convention. He finally relented, but it was
not a happy experience. I know of one supplier who
no longer goes to any trains shows more than one days
drive from his home. He refuses to take merchandise
on airplanes and if he cannot sell at the show there
is no reason for him to go. Interesting tale of
  modern day life.

  Less than fully cheerful....Ed L.
