My Stepfather was a postmaster in my small hometown in South Dakota. In
a small community we used to have folks come back from a trip come to
our house in the evenings and ask him to open up the post office so they
could get their mail--guess the next morning wouldn't wait. A neighbor
ordered bees and they came by PO; the box was broken and yes the bees
got out. Once a load of baby chicks was forgotten by the Rural Route
carrier on a Saturday, so he loaded them up in his car and delivered
them. Back when the mail came by train, the Milwaukee branchline
combine and a couple of tank cars derailed. The combine went on it's
side and all the mail got soaked with spilt cream that shared the
baggage area. The mail was pretty stinky!
Andy Malette with MLW will tell you a good story about taking a
locomotive through customs twice and US/Canadian POs. Those government
entities turned a very nicely built locomotive into a kit again.
