My experience with the USPS has been that when an insured parcel is "Lost" it
gets "Found". Not always true with uninsured ones. Also, it seems insured
packages are delivered more promptly than uninsured ones. So maybe the real
value of insurance with the P. O. is the extra effort they seem to put forth
when a package is insured.
With UPS one gets an automatic $100.00 of insurance when paying the shipping
cost so its a whole different ballgame.
Of course, things do get lost. Now where did I put,,,,?
Merry Christmas

Have you ever had an insured loss with UPS? How is the amount of the
loss determined? I have insured some items with the U.S. Postal
Service, but I have never had to make a claim. I am unsure how the
  process works.

There is, for example, no list price for out-of-production kits or for
brass models imported fifteen years ago or for scratch-built, prize
winning models. I can see where the insured shipper and the shipping
company may not agree on the value of the item that is lost or
damaged. Is the price the buyer agreed to pay sufficient proof?
