Hi all --

I know Rusty and Jim are probably not thinking this, but if you include Sn3
steam, the numbers get really large. I think 40 different standard gauge
types is easily possible -- I think I have had that many go through my
hands -- at least the checkbook seems to think that way! The following
list is off the top of my head and does not include class variations (like
NYC H10a & b), which would increase the numbers by a bunch. The list
includes 30 or so, produced, distinct models, plus a couple of variations
and a potential (NW 4-8-4), but if you add all the variations (classes,
multiple roads, etc) there must be at least 60....

0-8-0
2-8-0 std and camelback MP, UP, SP, CNJ(?)
2-8-2 PRR, SP, USRA, NYC
2-8-4 PM, NKP
4-8-4 SP, UP, NYC (NW)
2-10-0 PRR
2-10-2 SP
2-10-4 CO, PRR
2-6-6-2
2-6-6-4
4-6-6-4
2-6-6-6 CO, NW
4-8-8-2
4-8-8-4
4-4-2 SP, UP
4-6-0 (a couple, if you include MLW's)
4-6-2 USRA, PRR
4-6-4
4-8-2 PRR, NYC

If you have looked at the list, there are some notable vacancies -- 0-4-0,
0-6-0, 4-4-0, 2-6-0, 2-6-2, non-eastern 4-8-2's (ATSF DRGW SP) and ATSF, GN
and DRGW in general. Hopefully, the 0-6-0 situation will change.

Have fun!

Rusty:
Like anything else, it depends on how you slice it... If you count
by in-the-box, delivered physically different models, my guess is
the number will be over 50. RRM (if my back of envelope count is
correct) contributed 20 physically different steam locomotive
models: 9 SP; 6 C&O; 2 NYC and one each PRR, NKP and PM.

Then you have to add models from OMI, Omnicom, SWM and Sunset. I
don't know all the numbers, but the SP guys may actually have more
purpose built brass steam locmotive models in S scale than NYC or
PRR. Not sure, I'll let others run to the basement and start
counting! It is an interesting question though...
