> Drilling sand? Would that be out on the south side of Duncan?

The sand comes to us from the BNSF and the UP. Once trans-loaded off our
rails, it goes all over this region. East, west, north, south... where ever
the brokers receive an order for it. We have three drilling sand companies
we serve at the yard I work: Santrol, Francis Drilling Fluids, and Wildcat
Drilling. (5 seperate tracks devoted to them, a total of almost 100 spots.)

During this downside economy, the drilling sand business has been the saving
grace at our terminal. We currently have nearly 200 loaded drilling sand
cars onhand and all customer tracks are full. We typically will pull 20-30
empties per day, and spot in around that number.

For you modern rail modelers, this drilling sand stuff is a blessing for
layout operations: All you need is a track "X" cars long, some covered
hoppers, and a mobile conveyor that fits under them. You can then have
loaded cars carrying specific "blends", such as 30/70 60/40, etc. The
customer can specifcy what blends he needs spotted, and after pulling your
empties and sorting them outbound, you dig-out the required cars from your
tracks and spot them up. Big time moves for minimal structure (time
consuming) modeling.

Have fun!
