I am sure the freight car freaks on Steam era freight cars could pie chart
and bar graph this thing, but logic states there would be a lot of hoppers.
Consider the importance of hoppers on the Mighty PRR, N&W and the C&O during
the transition era alone. According to our own Keith Thompson there were
81000 hoppers live on the PRR in 1948. That is immense! 

The bulk products carried in hoppers are what the railroads did best. While
the intermodal has changed the balance, I am sure hoppers of various types
are still a major source of traffic and income today.
