I guess it depends on what part of the country you're from.  There have always
been hoppers in northern New England, but the percentage is pretty small
compared to box cars and reefers.  Small grain facilities, no coal mines, etc.
The largest user of coal in the 50s would be locale dealers, pulp mills, power
plants and the like.  Unit trains on the Bangor & Aroostook from Searsport to
Great Northern Paper Co. in Millinocket would be local hoppers running from the
docks to the user.  Ever see a B&A hopper in S?  Don't get me wrong, I'm not
complaining, it just seems as though every new issue of cars is 25 new hopper
road names and 5 box cars.  I guess I need to start a box car/hopper
relettering program.

As most of us older guys are discovering, I'm running out of time for special
projects.  Actually, I'm running out of time for everything :o)

Ed,

I am sure the freight car freaks on Steam era freight cars could pie chart
and bar graph this thing, but logic states there would be a lot of hoppers.
Consider the importance of hoppers on the Mighty PRR, N&W and the C&O during
the transition era alone. According to our own Keith Thompson there were
81000 hoppers live on the PRR in 1948. That is immense!

The bulk products carried in hoppers are what the railroads did best. While
the intermodal has changed the balance, I am sure hoppers of various types
are still a major source of traffic and income today.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
