The AAR Bureau of Economics gives the following stats for number of freight
cars by kinds on Class 1 Railroads in the United States:
1955
Box - general -- 661,194
Box - special -- 57,756
Hopper - open -- 506,449
Hopper - covered -- 42,609
next largest total was flat cars, at 56,124
out of 1,698,814 freight cars owned by Class 1 roads.
NOTE: Private refrigerator and tank car fleets were NOT included in these
totals.
1963
Box - general -- 545,751
Box - special -- 71,611
Hopper - open -- 431,712
Hopper - covered -- 73,216
next largest was still flat cars, at 49,385
out of 1,512,306 freight cars owned by Class 1 roads, again not including
private car fleets.
Total ownership of freight cars in the U.S. INCLUDING private car fleets on 31
December 1963 was 1,893,667. On the same date, Canada listed 181,719 cars and
Mexico 24,000.
During 1964, Class 1 railroads in the .U.S. originated the following car
loadings:
Miscellaneous -- 15,115,632
Products of mines -- 8,054,698
Grain/grain products -- 2,623,637
Forest products -- 1,960,982
Piggyback -- 890,216
L/C/L -- 639,750
Livestock -- 153,164

The same source states about 162,000 tank cars were operated in the U.S. at the
end of 1960, fewer than 5,500 owned by railroads.

Ed,
I am sure the freight car freaks on Steam era freight cars could pie chart
and bar graph this thing, but logic states there would be a lot of hoppers.
Consider the importance of hoppers on the Mighty PRR, N&W and the C&O during
the transition era alone. According to our own Keith Thompson there were
81000 hoppers live on the PRR in 1948. That is immense!
The bulk products carried in hoppers are what the railroads did best. While
the intermodal has changed the balance, I am sure hoppers of various types
are still a major source of traffic and income today.
