Stan, The AM boxcar is still the backbone car of many layouts. It does
have one very good redeeming value in the way the side pieces are
overlapped rather than butted together. Ron (or whoever) did an
excellent job with that detail. I don't think any other car in s scale
has that feature, so I thought it worthwhile to keep a few around.
What a couple of us here are doing with the box and the gon is to cut
away everything except the centersill, ribs, and bolsters on the second
floor so you basically have a skeleton . We then use some evergreen
strips to make long runners and to build up the centersill. I don't
know how accurate it might be but it looks impressive and you then
correct the backward appliances.
I was going to do an article on our process but the PRS cars pretty much
changed the picture.
