The NYC museum is right at the throat of a major rail yard that was part of the 
NYC/LS&MS Chicago-Elkhart-Toledo-NYC mainline.  There are museums in New York 
with NYC equipment - there is currently postings about one on one of the NYC 
lists (name escapes me now - Adirondack something or other?).

This part of Indiana was a major part of the nation's transportation system.  
The east/west LS&MS line and the north/south NYC/Big Four Michigan/Marion 
Branch are still a major component of Norfolk Southern.  (Before people get all 
excited, parts of the former NYC in Ohio, Indiana and possibly elsewhere, went 
to NS, not CSX.)
