I've noticed Brass Prices drop in "O" Scale when I decided to transistion to
"S" Scale. Luckily I sold most of it before October 2008. However, I believe
that demographics of Model railroaders / Collectors was already shrinking even
before the Recession hit (driving some prices lower).
I bought most of my "O" Scale Brass at Shows for decent Prices (i.e. under
E-bay prices paid by those who don't travel to Shows).
I have noticed prices for "S" Scale Brass decline alittle during past two
years, which took some of the sting out of losses I experienced selling my "O".
I've resolved that my heirs may not get much for my "S" Scale Brass when I die.
However, I for one never bought into sales pitch that Brass Models were a
solid investment. I buy them because I wanted (needed?) them, and have
actually paid more for my "S" Scale River Raisen NYC H-10b's than I have for
any of the Brass "O" Scale NYC locos I had. But then they weren't
Factory-painted with Cab details and Window glass!
I have effectively switched collections, selling my "O" and buying most of the
"S" I need with the proceeds.
Since available funds are now lower, I've become more careful about what I
purchase.
A bridge I haven't crossed yet is what happens when someone seeks support for a
new project (that I'm interested in) that will be substantially more expensive
than past models?
This is the true quandry. First I would have to convince myself I really
needed it. Second I would have to convince the Wife that I deserved it.
