I may not know what I'm talking about (not that has ever deterred me in the
past), being relatively new to S scale specifically, but my suspicion is that
there were never many of the CD 4-6-0's to begin with, as they appeared at the
end of the Depression when disposable income was limited for many prospective
buyers, and over the years there was attrition among those that were produced
(the materials of manufacture did not lend themselves to durability, either).

As to the Enhornings, I can't begin to conjecture why they are rare on the
secondhand market; perhaps because owners don't want to part with them,
perhaps there just weren't a lot of them made, as the S scale market, as small
as it is now, was a lot smaller a generation ago. As to the variety of
roadnames, that may have had something to do with Enhorning producing a
selection of decal lettering, which would have facilitated that.
