Hi Again John; I missed your question about couplers. All the currently available "scale" couplers are magnetically activated. Most equipment manufactured now is set up to take the Kadee S scale coupler (802, 803 depending on if you want black or rust color) or the S Helper coupler which uses the same mounting. Some older AM stuff may more easily use the older Kadee No. 5 or Walther's clone, but the difference is needing to drill and tap a couple of holes per coupler mounting.
As in HO, more of us use these couplers than use the magnetic uncoupling feature. Many operators use a small screw driver or other pick to separate the cars. The easiest approach would be to ask your U.S. supplier for enough couplers to fit all the stock you buy. Pieter E.
