   Hello John, Nice to meet a European interested in S scale.
 For a starter locomotive you might look at the S Helper Service diesel 
switcher   http://www.showcaseline.com/index2.html 
  The Pennsylvania had them in steam era days so they could be used together 
with steam locos as your layout grows.  SHS offers them with DCC and factory 
installed sound and they are very fine running well built locos. There is also 
an option to buy a Lenz DCC set along with the loco so you might see how that 
price compared to the price of the European DCC set? Don Thompson the owner of 
SHS is very accessible on the telephone or email so I would recommend giving
