  Haha, You use moisture, wet paint!  
    There must be varying grades of homasote cause the kind I've seen is bullet 
proof, I've seen tests where it was boiled and I've found bits in my yard that 
were lost in the dirt for 20 or 30 years and still sound.Despite that moisture 
resistance I don't use it any more cause it's just got a nasty texture to look 
at and work with.
 It is the best thing I've found for the old method of hand spiking track down 
to thin ties, the spike points don't bend when they exit the ties and hit 
homasote unlike they do with plywood roadbed. For O scale track I found  the 
ties were thick enough to leave out the homasote so I stopped using it, if I 
ever get around to building an S scale layout I plan to experiment with just a 
thin sheet of cork or other soft material  under the ties to give the spike 
points some clearance so they don't hit the plywood.....dave
