Jeff,

The foamboard/ceiling tile method will give you stable, low cost benchwork, but
this isn't for all situations. It is ideal for an around the wall layout.

On Jim Six's layout, two of us put up 100 feet of 2' wide benchwork in 30 hours
total, and his lumber, foamboard and ceiling tile cost was under 300.00 total.
He has an open span of about 6 feet across the back of his room, and Jim and I
both climbed on it and did not notice any flexing. We gained speed by shooting
nails into the wall, so no floor supports were needed, just some angle bracing.

Just another tool to consider for your layout. Good luck in whatever you try.

It is not minimal carpentry I am interested in, but stable low cost benchwork.
I

actually have a miter saw which I've been using. Anyway I took the dive and

bought a pack of 3 2x4 sheets of tile. Foam and OSB is soon to come.
