I went into S scale for the ideal size--I can still see the detail
parts, and I can operate a manageable model railroad in a 22' x 14'
space. I left Lionel O/O27 because I didn't like the truncated models
and the huge flanges and couplers. I have not be able to connect with
very many S scale modelers in southwestern Michigan but do appreciate
the guys who have been of particular help on this list: Dick Karnes,
Gail Hall, Bud Rindfleisch, Ed Loizeaux, Roger Nulton, Pieter Roos, Earl
Tuson, and Jeff English, Jamie Bothwell, and--well--I probably forgot
someone. Suffice it so say, they have all responded to inquiries. With
three of them I have enjoyed telephone conversations and the time to
discuss modeling ideas and prototypes at length.
But none of those mentioned live near me. I have the one HO modeling
friend here and would happily fellowship with an O-scaler if I knew of
one in the vicinity. Point is anyone who does prototype modeling is a
good person to know and relate to on a regular basis if that can be
done. Some of these prototype guys are amazing. Just google the
website that deals with Proto 1/48 modeling. The quality of work is
inspiring. And of course the articles by Ted Culotta that have appeared
in RMC over several years offer help to S scalers.
The articles whether in modeling journals or appearing on the internet
and the S scalers with whom I have become acquainted have really
inspired and helped me. I thank them for their help and believe the
dividing line is not along scale lines but along the lines of
scale/prototype and the hi-railers. Nothing wrong with hi-railers
either. I thank them for making S scale a size with sufficient
offerings these days.
