I don't think it's so much a mater of "S"hunning as it is
disinterest. Your typical S gauger (or any toy train operator -
Lionel too) has very little in common with a model railroader much
less the prototype modeling movement that is really gaining momentum
these days. Popular NMRA or magazine topics such as operations,
superdetailing, prototype research, DCC, etc. are of very little
relevance to Flyer guys. Since Flyer guys are a great majority of "S"
there you go - the impression that "S" is disinterested or shunning
the greater community. I think if you were to look at other groups
such as the TCA or the Classic Toy Trains type subscriber you would
find S gaugers more broadly represented and highly thought of.
I know a few of us here in Ohio are doing what we can to raise
awareness among the greater model railroading community that S scale
is an outstanding scale for operations, scratchbuilding and prototype
modeling. You'll see us more frequently at RPM meets and NMRA events.
