Good to hear . The U S Navy Hospital was at Silverstream. They took care of
extreme cases from both the Navy and the Marines. We also had a hospital in
the lower floor, and one small part of the second floor of the large center
grandstand. (plus an operating room) Most of our patients were Malaria repeat
cases and minor surgeries
The track authorities allowed us the use of the members grandstand on race
day(the one on the south side) Mainly to sell uas drinks and beer. We obliged
quite well as scotch and bourbon were closely regulated.

On the Southwest corner opposite the Army camp was a Chemist. Cecil Goudy.
Had many a meal there. I always took large bags of tea over there as few of our
group dranlk it.

Hada grand time those months.

There are two 'museum'jobs going on. There is the Fell Engine Museum in
Featherston, and the Rimutaka Railway Restoration Trust. The Fell Museum has
been up aand running for quite sometime now, an excellent facility, with one
off the Fell locomotives restored, and running on electric rollers. There is
also a lot of Incline memorabilia there too. A quality facility. The project to
reinstate the old railway line is an ambitious one.... one for the next
generation (their Operations Manager is a young bloke in the office next to
mine). They have completed a rolling stock depot at Mangaroa/Maymorn. I have
walked, and cycled the trail many times in the last 45 years, my daughter
fondly recalls the school camp we held at Summit. This summer we will be taking
her children up there. Trentham Racecourse is still a going concern, and is one
of the premier tracks in NZ. The Army are still established over the back of
the course. The Marines hospital was actually a few miles away at Silverstream.
I grew up 2 miles from there in Stokes Valley. It became a geriatric facility
after the war. It closed down about 15 years ago, and is now a convention
centre, with most of the original buioldings still in place. The main railway
line that passed the foot of the hospital has been diverted a bit upstream (and
duplicated). The original line has had the track relaid, and is now an
operating railway museum.

line is now a walking/cycle track. Sn3½ is a very popular scale here in NZ. I
had a few mates scratching their heads, when I said I was off to America to
ride some 3'6' gauge in California... I'm told it is America's only national
monument that moves!
