The Official NYC book "Diagrams, Dimensions & Classification of Freight Cars"
has a dimension of length shown like this:
"42'3" over running boards"
This terminology is repeated for each different boxcar.
Must be true that "roofwalks" is a modeling invention -- sort of like
"turnouts".
