Relative to the video, poles didn't break very often (they were very
substantial, and usually banded with steel or iron on the ends to prevent
splitting, although if the crew was careless, they could end up coming loose
and damaging cars, structures or crew. My understanding is that it was done
very slowly. Not just steam locomotives had them under the tender sills (along
with rerailing frogs), but quite a few diesel switchers had them for yard use,
up until perhaps 1960. Photos of many first-generation diesel switchers show
them hanging from the frame. Off the top of my head, I think the B&M even had
brackets for them on 44-tonner truck sideframes. It was a lot easier to pole a
car a bit to relocate it from an adjacent track than to have to run all the way
to the nearest crossover or end of a ladder, throw the switch/turnout, enter
the track, spot the car, reverse back to the turnout/switch, etc.

On a solid end sill or beam, one can simply drill a shallow dimple in the
material. For a raised one, solder a bit of brass tubing to a bit of sheet
brass and file it down; the solder will give a fillet to represent the rounded
pocket.
