I know this doesn't directly answer your question Dave but if you find a sugar refinery you'll also find molasses. I grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and as a kid used to visit the big sugar refinery on the waterfront were a family friend was a manager. The cane was brought in by the ship load from the Caribbean for processing into sugar with molasses being a by product. Some molasses was still being shipped out by rail into the '60s; mostly for animal feed if I remember correctly. Up until the late 50 I think most larger ports had at least one sugar refinery.

Does anyone know where molasses might have been hauled to or from by rail? I recall seeing a large interesting looking molasses tank in photos of the C&O Brooke ave yard in Norfolk and have always thought it would make a neat layout scenic element.....dave ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
